A design approach towards participatory machine learning

News & Updates

Civic AI and machine learning systems are increasingly used in public services, yet the choices and trade-offs behind these systems often remain invisible to citizens. This makes it difficult for people to understand how such technologies influence public life and even harder for them to participate in decisions about their use.

In this article, Clever Franke explains how, in collaboration with researchers from TU Delft, they developed a tool that helps citizens engage in the public conversation about civic machine learning systems. The work was carried out as part of the Human Values for Smarter Cities research project, led by the Civic Interaction Design group at the Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences.
